“It
used to be that if you were disabled and on television, they’d play soft
piano music behind you,” said Robert David Hall, a double amputee who
plays a coroner on “CSI.” “The thing I love about ‘CSI’ is that I’m just
Dr. Robbins.”
Many members of the disabled
population would like be treated as people who happen to have a
disability, rather than as people defined by disability. The Ed. |

 All
You Need is Love
Celebrate
the Swinging Sixties
Dig out those mini skirts and
Sergeant Pepper suits and help put the swing back into the sixties as
All You Need is Love celebrates this great decade on Thursday 28th to
Saturday 30th August at the Queen’s Theatre in Barnstaple .
This fabulous nostalgic show
recreates the decade that bore some of the world’s greatest hits, and
features an energetic cast who switch effortlessly between The Kinks,
The Rolling Stones, The Who, Elvis, The Beach Boys, Diana Ross, Mamas
and Papas, The Rolling Stones, Nancy Sinatra and of course The
Beatles.
Every aspect of 1960s music is
covered with sections dedicated to rock (Pinball Wizard, I Can’t Get No
Satisfaction), soul (Soul Man, Respect), school party pop (Da Do Ron
Ron, Stupid Cupid), country (Crazy, Stand By Your Man), Motown (Heard It
Through The Grapevine, My Girl), and many more to make this a real
magical, musical mystery tour of the swinging sixties.
Combining amazing dance routines
with the funky fashions of this legendary era, and visits to some of the
hippest landmarks to include Carnaby Street and Woodstock, this is the
complete homage to the sixties.

Volunteers wanted
STREETS OF BOURNEMOUTH
One of
Britain’s best-loved authors has agreed to be Patron to the project that
will bring the ‘Streets of Bournemouth’ to life via the world wide web.
Bill Bryson, the American best-seller, will directly support the
development of the ‘Streets of Bournemouth’ over the next two and a half
years. The project - managed by Bournemouth University and Bournemouth
Borough Council - was recently awarded a major grant of £440,000 from
the Heritage Lottery Fund to create a new ‘virtual museum’ in time for
the town’s bicentenary celebrations in 2010.
Bryson, who
previously lived and worked in the Bournemouth area, is calling on
members of the community to offer their services as volunteers to help
develop content for the unique online museum. Volunteers are needed to
contribute in areas such as copyright clearance of images, cataloguing
information about the images, transcribing tithe map apportionments, and
research into local history.
The tasks
themselves are not difficult: they simply require accuracy and, prior to
undertaking the work, volunteers will be given training by experts in
these fields. All ages and all backgrounds are welcome. The only
requirement is enthusiasm for local and family history.

Bristol-based blind
and partially-sighted choir seeks new members
Clear Sounds Choir
We have been in existence for over 5 years, and we
cater to primarily, but not exclusively, blind and partly sighted people
around Bristol. We're a growing outfit, and we would like to expand our
membership for our future events.
Interested in music - classical, religious, traditional and modern? Then
come along. Don’t worry, you need not be qualified in music – we’re not
either. But it’s good fun!!! Come and meet new people, help raise funds
for various good causes and join in the social fun. No audition
necessary. You don’t even need to be an expert on singing and we’ll give
you all the support in the world.
We’re a growing outfit always looking for ideas and people, especially
men. Rehearsals take place on a fortnightly basis between 7 - 9 pm on
Thursdays at St Stephens Church in the city centre. Our next rehearsal
is September 11th 2008, with another one on September 25th 2008. A
Christmas concert is planned for December, and we also have our annual
busking session around Christmas where we go carol singing at either the
Mall Galleries, Broadmead or Cribbs Causeway.
We practice using audio or verbal instructions so no prior knowledge of
reading music is necessary. All material can be provided in print, large
print, Braille or email. We are also happy to discuss transportation
with you, and depending on your location your transport may be heavily
subsidised – please contact for prior arrangement if you require
assistance with transport. It costs £2.50 per rehearsal.
If you would like to attend the next rehearsal, discuss your access
needs/transportation, or if you are interested in finding out more about
us, please do not hesitate to get in touch with Muzz on 07766 114719, or
email ml2438@bristol.ac.uk. Alternatively contact Auriol Britton on 0117
9668853 or visit our website on www.clearsoundschoir.org.uk. We look
forward to hearing from you.
