On Thursday 27 November art + power, a local
arts organisation, will be celebrating its 10 th
year in the
empowering arts. There will be a birthday party at Spike Island art studios
from 6pm to 8pm.
As well as the celebrating there will
be installations, led by the disabled and socially excluded participants,
comprising of visual arts, performance, film and interactive audience
boards. The participants will creatively, through performance, present the
definition of cultural exclusion and show the trailer for their new film
which will be launched in the spring 2009.
Celebrating the 10 th
birthday is only one
part of this event which also marks the start of art + power's new campaign
for creativity. The campaign will help release the arts in every individual,
with the aim of ending cultural exclusion. With art + power's new way of
working, with emphasis on each person's value, there is even more incentive
for everyone to be involved in the process of creating empowering arts.
Dave Richmond, Chief of Executive
comments: “The arts are not the privilege of the few. They are the
birthright of every one of us. We invite you all to share in this
celebration of the power of art and join with us in building a more
inclusive and creative community. ”
The campaign is a celebration of an inclusive culture, on a
bigger scale than ever before. It is designed to enable the widest range of
people across Bristol to take part, with future possibilities for the public
both regionally and nationally to join the campaign.
art + power
art + power is an arts organisation that supports disabled
and socially excluded people to become empowered through the arts. We do
this by facilitating and promoting high quality art, providing professional
development support, and encouraging teamwork and community development.
The arts can make a real difference to people’s lives.
Recognising people’s creativity instils value and personal respect and
enables people to take control of their destiny. art + power exists to make
the most of the potential for art to be a catalyst for personal, community,
and social change…because art empowers.
Our approach is innovative – we treat all participants as
valued members of an artistic community. We aim to empower, not to instruct,
to replace dependence with independence. We provide the resources for
creativity so that individuals and groups can empower themselves.
art + power is an open access group, we welcome anyone who
shares our aims and wants to work with us to empower people through the
arts. All participants are encouraged to become art + power members and have
a say in how art + power is run. We invite the whole community to share in
our emancipation and encourage everyone to celebrate our strides towards
freedom.
art + power was formed in 1998, where it started out at a
day centre in Shirehampton as an arts project for a group of people with
learning difficulties.
