Campaigners go airside...

Taking the Now Boarding campaign to new heights, a group of campaigners recently visited BAA Gatwick Airport to look at the accessibility of the air travel service provided for disabled travellers.

Campaigners took part in a run through of the check-in and boarding process along with representatives from Gatwick. A number of points were raised, including the need for better signage and hearing loop systems across the airport. In the meeting with staff wider issues were also discussed, such as disability equality training and how this should be implemented

     TRAVEL NEWS ... LATEST

DRIVING IN FRANCE & SPAIN: Those of you contemplating driving in August through France and Spain should remember that these two countries have their highest annual fatal accident rates during this period and particularly during the August bank-holiday, so take extra care. France is virtually closed during this period, with long tail backs often present at auto-route tolls and boarder crossings as well as Q's at petrol stations. Cash machines run out of money, and banks, shops, etc. could be closed in Spain for up to 3 days.

CLAMPDOWN ON UK DRIVERS WHO BREAK EU TRAFFIC LAW: European Traffic police are confiscating and/or impounding vehicles belonging to drivers who break their countries traffic rules and do not pay fines before leaving the country. New seaport computers will detect unpaid fines from throughout all the EU countries, the occupants detained and the vehicle impounded. Likewise within the UK, foreign drivers, particularly lorry drivers, could have their vehicles confiscated if they fail to pay fixed penalty or court fines before leaving the UK. These new tough laws within the UK could be operational by Spring 2009 but are in force in Europe - NOW.

TAKE YOUR PASSPORT WITH YOU: New security clampdowns and checks are now in place at seaports between mainland UK and the whole of Ireland which means that passports will have to be produced before boarding ferries. Welsh and Scottish sea ports are all affected.

TROLLEY CHARGES:
Luton Airport is to charge passengers to use its luggage trolleys. It will be the first major airport in the UK to make people pay a £1 fee for a trolley when it introduces the fees on 26 July. Passenger groups have criticised the move - saying it is just being done to make money. But the airport defended the charge saying passengers would be getting "a better trolley service" with newer and better designed trolleys.
Gatwick and Stansted both charge for trolleys but when you put them back the money is refunded. At Norwich airport, trolleys are free but there's a controversial passenger tax, which will go up from £3 to £5 in September
