The Editor of this site, Alan,
is a member of the Dawe family who have had a presence in Cornwall
for over 600 years.
Alan's branch of the family, as he
puts it, "scarpered across the Tamar" at the turn of the 19th. century to Brixham, in Devon,
from where one of his forefathers sailed as a captain in
Nelson's Trafalgar Fleet. From there the family moved to Gloucester and in
the 20th. century to York, where Alan was born.
Alan, has
been a 'jobbing' musician since the age of 14. Under his professional name
Alan St. Clair, he has spent a lifetime working in the entertainment &
tourism industry as a dancer, singer, DJ, piano bar entertainer, cruise
director and finally hotel and corporate event manager.
He has worked in a multitude of venues ranging from Casinos, 5 Star Hotels,
Theatres, Cruise Ships, International Piano Bars and even Butlins, Minehead.
From London's West End to the Ritz in Paris and New York's Carlyle Hotel,
his career has taken him to Europe, Scandinavia, the Middle East, the USA,
South America and the Caribbean. He moved to Cornwall six years ago and
regularly appeared at Hotels in Newquay.
Unfortunately, an ongoing illness led
to him having a leg amputated in 2006. However, not letting a little
thing like an operation deter him, Alan has adapted to his new status and
become increasingly involved in 'disability' matters, the culmination of
which has led to the setting up of this site. He continues to be involved
in the Arts scene in the region with an obvious emphasis on promoting
"disabled arts".
Alan says
... " Obviously, we live in a
predominantly rural area, there are resources but they are few and there was no one to point me in their
direction. Disabled people like a social life as much as the anyone and
whilst sitting around waiting for a part as a one legged piano player in
'Doc Martin' I thought I could do something useful. Hopefully this site will
help make it easier for people to find accessible places, make friends
and generally have a more interesting life". |
